dMAT 2026 at a glance
What is the dMAT?
The dMAT (Digital Master Test) is a computer-based academic aptitude test jointly introduced by APS India and g.a.s.t. (the German Society for Academic Study Preparation and Test Development). From 2026 it becomes an additional part of the APS documentation that selected Indian students must submit when applying for a Master's degree in Germany.
Importantly, the dMAT tests reasoning and problem-solving ability, not subject knowledge. There is no chapter-wise syllabus to cram — preparation is about getting fast and confident with the specific question formats, which are unlike JEE, CAT, GATE or university exams.
Who needs to take the dMAT?
In its first phase, the dMAT is required only if all three of the following are true:
- Your bachelor's degree is in engineering (including computer science and IT), commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business or management;
- You are applying for the Summer Semester 2027 intake or later; and
- You start your APS on or after 29 June 2026 (and not through an exchange, double-degree or partnership programme).
You are exempt if you are applying for Winter Semester 2026/27 or earlier, if you began your APS registration or already hold your APS certificate from before 29 June 2026, or if your field is outside the list above. Students applying for Bachelor's programmes in Germany are not covered by the dMAT at this stage.
dMAT exam pattern & question types
The dMAT is delivered in two modules with a short break in between, for a total of around 3.5 hours. The Core Module measures general cognitive and analytical skill through three question types, each a fixed set of 20 questions with 25 minutes per subtest:

A second Subject / General Academic Module follows. The exact question count for this module is not officially published by g.a.s.t., so treat any figure you see elsewhere as an estimate. The dMAT is offered in English or German, with single-choice answers.
Key dates & how to register
For the first sitting in India:
- Registration opens 29 June 2026 on the official dMAT portal, linked from the APS India process.
- Register and pay the €150 fee to g.a.s.t. before the deadline of 15 September 2026.
- Sit the exam on 26 September 2026 at a designated test centre / online as specified.
- Results are issued on 12 October 2026 and the certificate becomes part of your APS documentation.
How much does the dMAT cost?
The dMAT fee is €150, paid directly to g.a.s.t. when you register. In Indian rupees that is roughly ₹16,300, depending on the euro-to-rupee rate on the day. This is separate from the usual APS fee.
How to prepare for the dMAT
Because the dMAT is brand new in India, there are no previous Indian dMAT papers. The most effective preparation is:
- Learn the three Core question formats cold — figure sequences, equation systems and Latin squares reward pattern recognition and speed, which only come with repetition.
- Practise under the real clock — 25 minutes per subtest is tight. Timed, full-length mocks train your pacing so you don't run out of time on the last questions.
- Review your mistakes — understanding why an answer is right matters more than raw attempts.
